Event Details
Capitol Park running route at the beginning of August, 2022.
Update:
Unfortunately we faced a number of setbacks while trying to pull this off for 2024 and the event is canceled. Those issues included a denial by the State for use of Capitol Park, and a severe recruiting problem. We were able to work out a relocation plan to Portland, but we were not able to secure runners. Injuries, PCS moves, training challenges, etc. We lost all but 3 runners by the 100 day out mark. The event has been canceled and we will try to brainstorm for a future event. Suggestions and ideas are very welcome, please submit them through our Contact Us page.
Tentative Plan
The proposed route is a .46 mile gravel loop in Capitol Park, Augusta, Maine. The nearly flat course is directly across from the State House. The park, created in 1827, hosts a beautiful Vietnam Memorial, a 9/11 Memorial, incredible trees, and views of the Kennebec River when the foliage is not in full bloom.
Although the Capitol will be closed for the holiday, having the event right in front of our state government should catch the attention of our elected officials. We must bring their attention to this issue and apply pressure towards solutions to affect positive change.
There are many pros to this route including its location in front of the State House, gradual inclines(32 feet per mile), ease of logistic support, and forgiving gravel path.
Conversely, there are many cons to the route including the high number of laps required, the possible congestion hazard as the path is not terribly wide, and the permitting obstacle. The park has very specific rules prohibiting overnight activities, so an exception to the park rules will need to be sought.
An area of the park adjacent the trail would be established as an aid station, providing support options and facilities every half mile. An official timing service would keep track of the laps and timing, though this is not a race.
22 Veterans will begin the run on November 11, 2024, after the posting of the colors. Runners will continue at their own unique paces until each has completed 218 laps. Pacers are permitted and welcome on the course. There is also space along the route for supporters. A plan will be developed to make up lost miles in the event of an injury. Either an alternate runner will start, or the other runners will tack on the extra mileage to ensure the 2,200 goal is met.
As this is a tentative plan, alternate routes are being considered. There are some wonderful options at local universities including the University of Maine at Augusta, Thomas College in Waterville, and Colby College in Waterville. Numerous generous companies have already pledged support for the event offering services from food to massage, so there will not be a lack of enthusiastic observers or supporters at any time.
Participant fees: NONE
Unlike the hefty cost of most ultra marathon events, this event is 100% free to the runners. Through donations and personal investment, we will keep the event open to those willing to train for and endure the 100 miles in an effort to save the lives of our fellow Veterans.
